Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila has said the green chamber went on recess as practiced by legislatures all over the world.

Recall that 39 Civil Society Organisations(CSO’s) have vehemently kicked against the suspension of legislative and oversight responsibilities by the National Assembly, particularly the House of Representatives.

According to the CSOs, the legislative year is between June 2019 and July 2020, two months’ vacation, 56 days public holiday, 6 weeks yuletide vocation, 42 days coronavirus break, 49 days in addition to 62 days for Saturday’s and Sunday.

However, speaking to State House correspondents yesterday, Gbajabiamila said there  has been a lot of misunderstanding and misconception on the issue.

He explained that whatever form of democracy that is practiced anywhere in the world, there would always be an annual recess, saying they are not re-inventing anything.

He said, “Recess has only one meaning in the dictionary. You are either on recess or you are working. I have perhaps been one of the longest serving members in the House”.

“I have never known of a situation, I’m yet to be proven wrong, when on an annual summer recess, members are working, conducting public hearingsand doing investigations. I’m not talking about any other recess,” he added.
