As sex-related offences like rape, pedophilia, sexual harassment and assault continue to make the headlines in the country, a petition was launched in March, urging the government to implement a country wide sex offenders registry.

Looks like the government has listened, as they have announced the launch of a sex offenders’ register to put a stop to incidences of sexual violence.

The Vice-President, Yemi Osinbajo, in association with The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) and other international stakeholders, will be officially launching “The Nigeria Sexual Offender Register” on 25th November, and the keynote speaker at the launch is Nobel Laureate Leymah Roberta Gbowee.

The register will have names of those convicted, and while conviction on sexual violence cases continues to be very low, the existence of the register, still, is a move forward.
