The management of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) has cautioned its customers against the use of UNISTAR prepaid meters, adding that they should be aware of the activities of fraudsters who have been operating within its franchise, selling and installing the meters.

The IBEDC, in a statement by its Chief Operating Officer, Engr. John Ayodele, made available to DAILY POST Tuesday, revealed that it had stopped the sale of the meters to customers since 2914 in compliance with the directives of the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

It maintained that any customer who purchased the UNISTAR meters after 2014 did not buy from IBEDC and as such were not paying for the electricity used on the meters to them whenever they vend.

The act according to the distribution company is capable of misleading customers and portraying the company as an organization that does not have regard for the rule of law.

While pledging that the organization was committed to metering all its customers through the current National Mass Metering Programme (NMMP) approved by the Federal Government of Nigeria, Engr. Ayodele appealed to customers to be more cautious and not fall into the hands of fraudsters who parade themselves as marketers, selling and installing illicit meters not recognized by the company or approved by NERC.

He explained that from the 105,000 meters allocated to IBEDC under Phase zero of NMMP, the company has metered over 69,000 of their customers while they continue to give free meters to customers within their network as the next phase of the program kicks off soon.

“Do not pay anyone for meter or installation. Customers or stakeholders that want meters should visit any IBEDC office closest to them or call our Customer Careline 07001239999, for more information and clarification visit www.ibedc.com”, he advised.
